Wembley pitch ruined by NFL match ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s Monday night clash with Man City

Wembley will host its second football fixture in two days on Monday evening as Tottenham Hotspur take on Manchester City at the national stadium of England.

However, the Premier League match will take place hours after an NFL game between Jacksonville Jaguars and Philadelphia Eagles on the same surface.

Images of the match showed the grass pitch cut up by the heavy action between the two visiting teams.

Broken turf and poor grass coverage can be an impediment to teams that want to play possession football with the ball harder to control.

Damaged surfaces can also lead to a greater risk of injury for players.

Both Mauricio Pochettino and Pep Guardiola have have to consider whether they will select midfielders to start the game who are working their way back to full fitness with Dele Alli and Kevin De Bruyne potentially returning for Spurs and City, respectively

On the positive side, a pitch in poor condition can be a leveller for teams against a more technically proficient opponent, usually in cup competitions such as the FA Cup.

While Tottenham would hardly be considered as giant killers if they were to beat their title rivals, their manager did hint that the surface could play into their hands in his pre-match press conference.

“Maybe it is good for us because we are going to face one of the best teams in Europe and the world in Manchester City and maybe it will help us,” said Pochettino.

“It wasn’t a plan for us to play in that period at Wembley and now we cannot complain. Only we need to accept the reality and know that we cannot change that.

“I am sure all the people that are involved in the pitch are going to work so hard to get it in a really good condition. That is my wish and I hope it can happen.

“We hope that the weather will be good and not kill the pitch and we can play in a very good condition.”

Guardiola also had his say in his press conference before the game.

“It’s what it is,” he said, as reported by Manchester Evening News . “I’m pretty sure Tottenham have a good greenkeeper, I’m pretty sure the Premier League don’t like it. Tottenham too.

“When you take care properly and focus, knowing that the pitch may not be in the best condition and you have to be ready.

“We are going to take a decision which is the best line up and we are going to see.”

Fans online were left aghast at the images of the Wembley pitch as the NFL game was aired on terrestrial TV.

The match between Spurs and City was originally supposed to take place at the new Tottenham stadium on Sunday October 28.

Due to delays in the construction of the ground, and the fixture clash due to the NFL’s booking, the game had to be switched to the evening of Monday October 29 at Wembley, the day after the Jaguars’ clash with the Eagles.
