- Marta reflects on her best FIFA Women’s World Cup strikes
- The Brazilian is the tournament’s all-time top scorer
- All three of the strikes picked out came against reigning champions USA
No-one has scored more FIFA Women’s World Cup™ goals than Marta.
The Brazil icon and reigning The Best FIFA Women’s Player holds the tournament record, thanks to 15 strikes spread over four editions. Picking out her top three, therefore, was no easy task.
As she joked in this interview with FIFA TV: “It’s difficult. I’ve scored too many!”
Ultimately, a theme did begin to emerge: her favourite goals all came against the same formidable foes. They might be the most successful team in Women’s World Cup history, after all, but even USA have struggled against Marta’s unique brand of magic.
Two of the selected strikes came in the Americans’ heaviest defeat at the global finals: a stunning 4-0 loss in the last four at China 2007. Marta was irresistible that night; indeed, her performance in Hangzhou is still widely considered the finest individual showing the Women’s World Cup has ever seen.
Now, with France 2019 beckoning and this all-time great still going strong, do not be surprised if she raises the bar once again and adds yet more goals to her record haul.
