The 12 teams battling it out to join Tottenham and Chelsea in the Champions League group stage

Tottenham and Chelsea will soon discover who they will face in the Champions League group stage with the draw taking place at the end of the month.

The third qualifying round for the competition took place on Tuesday evening as 12 teams advanced to the final play-off round ahead of the draw in Monaco on Thursday, August 29.

Celtic exited Europe’s elite competition following a 4-3 home defeat against Romanian side CFR Cluj, while Porto, who reached the quarter-finals last season, lost on away goals to Krasnodar.

Swiss side Basel were also a notable exit as they crashed out 5-2 on aggregate against Austrian outfit LASK.

The first leg of the play-offs will take place next week, with the return leg taking place a week later ahead of the draw for the group stage.

The pots for the draw still need to be finalised but Chelsea will be in pot one and Tottenham in the pot two.

Although the Blues failed to qualify for last year’s competition after missing out on the top four, they join the likes of Barcelona, Man City and Liverpool in the top pot due to their Europa League triumph.

Spurs would have joined them in pot one had they beaten Liverpool in the Champions League final at the start of June, yet they will have to make do with a place in pot two.

That does mean they will come up against one of Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain or Zenit St Petersburg in the group stage, although they will be confident of progressing following their performances in the competition over the past couple of years.
